The Burlington Chito Ryu Karate Club is a registered non-profit organization. Our goal is to promote health and self defense through the practice of traditional Chito Ryu karate.Our dojo is affordable, family oriented and has been a part of the Burlington, Ontario community since 1987.
The dojo ( Japanese for training hall ) head instructor is Sensei Debbie Brooks ( 4th dan, Shihan ) and her 'second in command' is Sensei Don Lawson ( 4th dan, Shidoin ).
We are guided and assisted by our Renshi Murray Sutherland.
We receive ultimate guidance from Hanshi Shane Higashi ( 10th dan, Saiko Shihan ) the head of the Canadian Chito Ryu Karate-Do Association.
Our students learn traditional and healthy techniques, developed by Dr. T. Chitose, our style's founder.
Currently we provide training Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 7pm -830pm.
New students are welcomed at any time, and are inducted quickly and safely into a challenging and invigorating program.
Sensei Debbie Brooks is an NKA Masters Kumite gold medalist and former Chito Ryu World Masters Kumite Champion. She is a 4th degree Black Belt, holds the 'Shihan' (Master Instructor) teaching certificate, and is an N.C.C.P. certified Karate Coach.
Sensei Brooks is a retired teacher with the Halton District School Board with an M.Ed of Education. She has also been profiled on the Women's' Television Network.
Sensei Don Lawson is a 4th degree black belt ( yondan ) in Chito Ryu Karate.
Don has been studying and practicing martial arts since 1973 and holds the teaching certificate of 'Shidoin'.
A former Chito Ryu Provincial and National team member, Don has competed locally, provincially and internationally in karate, judo and jiu jitsu tournaments.
"Sensei Don", as the younger students call him, was awarded 'Instructor of the Year' by Hanshi Shane Higashi ( 10th dan ) while teaching at the Canadian Chito Ryu headquarters.
Don is a retired firefighter Training Officer, a former paramedic, and an instructor at Humber College in Toronto. He brings his knowledge of anatomy, safety and educational techniques to our Club for the benefit of all.
We also have four more black belt instructors who assist us with the development of new students. All students get lots of personal, expert instruction!
